MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY OF SERVICE (JANUARY 18, 2010)
to GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY (APRIL 23-25, 2010)

About Semester of Service

Semester of Service links prominent national service events - such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and Global Youth Service Day - through an extended service-learning framework of at least 70 hours. Young people ages 5-25, spend the “semester” addressing a meaningful community need connected to intentional learning goals and/or academic standards. Throughout, the teacher or facilitator supports the emergence of “youth voice” as young people guide the process.

Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy integrating meaningful community service with academic study and reflective practice to enrich learning, build civic engagement, and strengthen communities. Semester of Service emphasizes “duration and intensity”, enriching the experience by providing participants with enough time to incorporate the five stages of service-learning: Investigation, Preparation & Planning, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration/Celebration.

Youth Service America Launches Semester-Long Campaign to Mobilize Student Volunteers

Youth Service America (YSA) launches Semester of Service on January 19, 2009, a campaign to engage millions of young people across America in semester-long community service programs. With support from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Semester of Service provides the framework and tools for children and youth from schools, colleges and universities, youth centers, and faith-based organizations to improve their communities.

Semester of Service links two highly-visible service events: Martin Luther King Day of Service in January and Global Youth Service Day in April. Semester of Service provides opportunities for “service-learning” as students link community service with in-school or out of school curriculum. YSA provides several resources that allow students to plan, implement, and reflect on their projects, including the Semester of Service Strategy Guide. A classroom poster and tool kit (available at www.semesterofservice.org) include lesson plans and suggestions on how youth, schools, and organizations can implement positive change in communities.

According to a report from RMC Research Corporation, service-learning has a greater impact on both the child and the community when the duration of the project lasts the length of a semester, spanning approximately 70 hours. In addition to promoting higher rates of academic achievement, service-learning also provides opportunities to foster diversity, technical and social skill building, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and youth leadership. Semester of Service projects will focus on challenges in health, education, human service, and the environment.

“Children and youth can be huge assets and resources to their communities, the country, and the world,” said Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of YSA. “Semester of Service and the accompanying resources empower students to improve their communities while also learning about how the problems were created in the first place.”

Bank of America is the lead sponsor for YSA’s Semester of Service campaign, providing major grant support to the initiative. Its sponsorship, alongside funders that include the Corporation for National and Community Service, State Farm Companies Foundation, Disney, and UnitedHealth Group, enables YSA to provide resources for educators and over 200 small grants to student groups and teachers implementing Semester of Service projects.

“Bank of America believes today’s youth have an opportunity to positively impact the world we live in,” said Kerry Sullivan, National Philanthropy Executive, Bank of America. “By investing in student service, Bank of America invests in an infrastructure that benefits individuals in need, putting communities on the road to economic recovery.”

Studies show that 69% of high school dropouts see no relevance to school and are not motivated to get their degree. Semester of Service harnesses youth energy and directs it toward positive, visible outcomes. By connecting community service and learning, students discover that school is meaningful in their daily lives and that they have the capacity to change the world.

Youth Service America improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of children and youth, ages 5-25, serving in substantive roles. Founded in 1986, YSA is an international nonprofit resource center that partners with thousands of organizations in more than 100 countries to expand the impact of the youth service movement with families, communities, schools, corporations, and governments. For more information, visit www.YSA.org.

Bank of America
Building on a long-standing tradition of investing in the communities it serves, Bank of America will embark in 2009 on a new, ten-year goal to donate $2 billion to nonprofit organizations engaged in improving the health and vitality of their neighborhoods. Funded by Bank of America, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation gave more than $200 million in 2007, making the bank the most generous financial institution in the world and the second largest donor of all U.S. corporations in cash contributions. Bank of America approaches giving through a national strategy called "neighborhood excellence" under which it works with local leaders to identify and meet the most pressing needs of individual communities. Through Team Bank of America, bank associate volunteers contributed more than 650,000 hours in 2007 to enhance the quality of life in their communities nationwide. For more information about Bank of America Corporate Philanthropy, please visit www.bankofamerica.com/foundation.

Global Youth Service Day is the largest youth service event in the world and is a year-round effort to expand the impact of the youth service movement. The initiative launches new service organizations, policy changes, and sustainable service programs to create a culture of engaged youth. State Farm Companies Foundation is the presenting sponsor in the United States. Planning Tool Kits, Service-Learning Curriculum Guides, Classroom Posters, Global Youth Service Grants, and more are available for youth, parents, teachers, and organizations.

Martin Luther King Day of Service was initiated by Congress in 1994 to build on Dr. King’s legacy, transforming the federal holiday honoring him into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The aim is to make the holiday a day ON, where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned. MLK Day is organized by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

About Semester of Service

"Martin Luther King was interested in big results not the short-term. So, the idea of King Day being the signal for a long-term commitment by millions of students over a semester would have warmed his heart. . . Martin always asked us to do more than we were doing because the road ahead was still so long. . . The Mountain to climb was still so tall. The Semester of Service is just that opportunity to do more."
- Former Senator Harris Wofford, Colleague and Lawyer of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Semester of Service encourages students, ages 5-25, to develop a semester-long service-learning project that launches on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and culminates on Global Youth Service Day. Projects take place in classrooms as part of the academic curriculum; in schools as part of the extra-curricular activities; in congregations of faith; and in youth development organizations in neighborhoods across the United States. During these 12 weeks, young people from elementary schools to colleges & universities will identify a problem or unmet need that affects their community, the nation, or the world. They will prepare a plan, take action to implement their solution, reflect on their progress and next steps, and celebrate their success.

GOALS:
• To enable youth as change-makers, creating a quantum leap in the number of diverse young people addressing critical needs in their communities
• To sustain the quality, high-impact work done on MLK Day and GYSD, moving service projects from episodic acts into long-term service-learning experiences.
• To leverage existing partnerships around MLK Day and GYSD, advancing bold goals to expand the American youth service and service-learning movement

TOOLS & RESOURCES:
• Semester of Service Strategy Guide
• Semester of Service PowerPoint
• GYSD Service-Learning Curriculum Guide
• GYSD Project Planning Toolkit
• GYSD Classroom Poster
• Strategic Service Issue Modules
• Engaging At-Risk Youth In Service

GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE GRANTS
By putting funds directly into the hands of youth, YSA supports young people in making substantive change in communities. Grantees are required to demonstrate a community need and an ability to solve problems through innovative solutions, engage other youth and partners from different sectors, evaluate the results of their project, and envision future plans to continue their service. State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants, Disney Minnie Grants, and UnitedHealth HEROES grants will all support Semester of Service projects.

PUBLIC MOBILIZATION
Media Campaign - In the last year, YSA’s work has generated more than 1.5 billion
media hits on radio, television, newspaper, and internet outlets. YSA will leverage our extensive media outreach capability to raise awareness and build participation.

Outreach - YSA will leverage its existing network, including 125+ National Partners, 75 GYSD Lead Agencies (including ten MLK Lead Agencies responsible for engaging at least 1,000 young people each), and hundreds of grant winners. Key partnerships include:
  • The Corporation for National and Community Service has embraced Semester of Service as a strategy to meet its goals to expand overall participation in MLK Day of Service, engage more disadvantaged youth, and use the holiday as a gateway for ongoing service.
  • America's Promise Alliance has adopted Semester of Service and Global Youth Service Day as key components of their Ready for the Real World National Action Strategy. This strategy seeks to engage every middle-school student in service learning and career exploration.
  • Bank of America supports Semester of Service as the Lead Sponsor: “Bank of America believes today’s youth have an opportunity to positively impact the world we live in,” said Kerry Sullivan, National Philanthropic Executive, Bank of America. “By investing in student service, Bank of America invests in an infrastructure that benefits individuals in need, putting communities on the road to economic recovery.”
Semester of Service is a program of Youth Service America in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service and with support from Bank of America as well as State Farm Companies Foundation, Disney, and United Healthcare.

Semester of Service Quotes

"Martin Luther King was interested in big results not the short-term. So, the idea of King Day being the signal for a long-term commitment by millions of students over a semester would have warmed his heart...Martin always asked us to do more than we were doing because the road ahead was still so long... The Mountain to climb was still so tall. The Semester of Service is just that opportunity to do more."
- Former Senator Harris Wofford, Colleague and Lawyer of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Recent research has shown that projects must be of sufficient duration, typically at least a semester of 70 hours long to have an impact on students. Fewer hours simply do not give the students enough time to grapple with difficult issues or to have a deep enough experience to make the learning endure.”
- Dr. Shelley Billig, Unpacking What Works in Service Learning

“Children and youth prove daily that they desire to be civically engaged. The Semester of Service campaign and accompanying resources empower students to create change in their communities while also developing a deeper understanding of educational subject matter.”
- Steven Culbertson, President & CEO, Youth Service America

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. At this moment of great challenge and great change, renewing the promise of America begins with renewing the idea that in America, we rise or fall as one nation and one people."
- President Barack Obama

"Take on an issue – a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it. If you make it the focus of your career, that would be phenomenal. But you don’t have to do that to make an impact. For a few hours every week, you can use the growing power of the Internet to get informed, find others with the same interests, see the barriers, and find ways to cut through them."
- Bill Gates @ Harvard University, June 2007

Research & Studies

The Impact of Participation in Service-Learning on High School Students’ Civic Engagement
This study compared more than 1,000 high school students who participated in service-learning programs with those who did not participate in schools matched for similar demographics and student achievement profiles. The intention was to estimate the effects of service-learning compared to more traditional ways of teaching similar subject areas. The outcomes measured ranged from civic knowledge, behaviors, and dispositions to school engagement factors, such as attachment to school and enjoyment of coursework, that generally predict academic success. Students came from sites in the southeast, north central, and western parts of the United States. More than half of the students in the sample were Latino/Hispanic. This study found that, among others things, "School attachment, civic skills, and community attachment were rated highest by students in programs of 1 semester in duration."

Engaged for Success: Service-Learning as a Tool for High School Dropout Prevention
This report presents original and secondary research that shows the ability of service-learning to address some of the principle causes of dropping out. It highlights findings from a nationally representative survey of 807 high school students, including 151 at-risk students, who share their views of service-learning. The report also examines the results of focus groups of service-learning teachers who provide specific examples of the ways in which service-learning has affected their students, as well as interviews with current students who offer their perspectives on service-learning programs. And the report draws upon research from a comprehensive national literature review, which found that service-learning improves almost every aspect of education that has an effect on graduation rates.

K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice
The new K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice are released as a product of a year-long series of refinements to the Principles of Effective Practice for K-12 Service-Learning conducted through stakeholder reactor panels. These standards and indicators were vetted through a series of “reactor panels” convened nationwide by the National Youth Leadership Council and RMC Research Corporation. The panels were composed of young people, teachers, school and district administrators, community members, staff from community-based organizations, policy-makers, and others interested in service-learning. The process was much like setting content standards in other fields. Each panel considered the work of the two before them, revising the standards and indicators to ensure that they included the strongest aspects of quality, and to make the wording clearer, measurable, and actionable.

Unpacking What Works in Service-Learning: Promising Research-Based Practices to Improve Student Outcomes
Summary of research supporting the eight Principles of Effective Practice for K-12 Service-Learning. Each principle is defined and supported with the most current research. Included in this article are examples of how each principle can be incorporated into classroom practice.

Growing to Greatness: The State of Service-Learning
Growing to Greatness (G2G) is the first comprehensive national study of the state of service-learning in kindergarten through 12th grade. It documents the unfolding story of service-learning, providing information to improve implementation, inform public policy, and give a clear picture of the many ways young people contribute to society. This fourth year report follows the 2004 report (focus on impact on schools), the 2005 report (focus on impact on students), and the 2006 report(impact of service-learning on youths’ transitioning to adulthood and the impact of service-learning on the broader community). In 2007, we presented the Principles of Effective Practice. This year, we celebrate the collective work of many communities around the country in refining those original principles, translating them into the new K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice, and observing how the whole service-learning movement is evolving and maturing.
